Each Tuesday from 8:00am-8:30am, we gather in Alex Schimel's office (A315) for a 30-minute mindfulness sitting. Alex, a full-time academic support advisor and adjunct professor, gained renown while at Miami Law for his unmatched academic success and by helping other law students prepare for exams.

Alex designs and implements programming to help students acclimate to law school and achieve academic success. He is a member of the Dade County Bar Association and Federal Bar Association's Mindfulness in Law Joint Task Force.

The "Just Is" Story Sitting is named for Joseph Story, an American lawyer and jurist who served on the Supreme Court of the United States from 1811 to 1845. In November 1811, at the age of thirty-two, Story became the youngest Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States.

His 1841 opinion in the case of United States v. The Amistad, was the basis for a 1997 movie directed by Steven Spielberg where Story was played by retired Supreme Court justice, Harry Blackmun.

An educator, Story was the first Dane Professor of Law at Harvard University, where he won the enduring affection of his students, who had the benefit of learning from a sitting Supreme Court justice.
